In this month of tradition I have created a new one in my life. It started at the end of 2020 and I repeated it at the end of this year so I think it officially is a tradition now 😉
What I do is this: I simply give money away.
It is a joy to do that and a privilege to be able to do so, even if it is just a few hundred euros.
I get to think about what matter most and then I transfer a few hundred euros to here and a few hundred to there.
I did give away money before 2020 but it was bits here and there during the year and I never had an overview of where it went or how much it was.
What this conscious version of giving bigger chunks of money in one go away does for me is teach me what matters most to me.
This matters because I like organising my life around what matters most to me and the Leonie of last year is not an expert on the Leonie of this year so I have to keep myself updated.
And also it focusses my attention on what I have instead of what I lack. It makes me feel very rich to give money away.
So it is structurally a good idea for me to built this into my life.
I love crunching my numbers since it gives me such clarity so here they are:
35% of the money went to climate related causes
65% of the money went to free information and social equality and decolonisation related causes
In 2020 they were more or less the same percentages.
I also give time away each year. That I have been doing since many years. Funny, I had this idea that I had no money to give away but I could give some of my time. And this idea was in place in years that were richer then my current days. Now I like to do both.
I guess anyone who has more income than they spend can give money away, even if it is just a little bit more. If you like the idea and don’t have the habit yet, give it a try and let me know!
